Alan Turing (1912-1954), commonly known as the father of the modern computer, used his phenomenal mathematical and logistic skills to build a machine in order to crack some of the most complex German codes of the second world war. It is estimated that his efforts shortened the length of the war by at least 2 years. However despite his professional success, he suffered intense personal trauma, leading to a tragic death. Turing’s legacy has much to teach us about dedication and determination as well as showing us how damaging society can be to someone who does not fit the expected norms.
Rev’d Doctor Gemma Dashwood is an honorary priest at St John’s Cathedral, and in her spare time works as a doctor in Brisbane, Bundaberg and beyond. When not working in either a hospital or a Cathedral, she can probably be found asleep on the couch at home with her dogs.
This event will be held ‘in person’ in the Cathedral, over YouTube and Zoom. Choral Evensong will be ‘in person’ at 6pm in the Cathedral and will also be accessible at 6pm here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNK4UfKhyzHdskN-s_Q9e4Q.
