About this Event
We are delighted to welcome you to our Winter Concert, the second concert of a very special year for us: our 50th Anniversary Season. This evening, we explore "Mysteries of the Season," a theme that looks beyond the festive surface to the profound wonder and contemplation inherent in the holidays. This concept is visually introduced by our cover art, Francisco de Zurbarán’s Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose. As composer Morten Lauridsen observed about the painting, "the objects in this work are symbolic offerings to the Virgin Mary. Her love, purity and chastity are signified by the rose and the cup of water. The lemons are an Easter fruit that, along with the oranges with blossoms, indicate renewed life. The table is a symbolic altar."
Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery), an ethereal, contemplative work, contemplates the miracle of the newborn King. Since we meet this evening on the first night of Hanukkah, we also feature Steve Reisteter’s The Eighth Candle, which honors the spiritual mystery of light, providence, and renewal.
We hope you enjoy this concert.
