My Varykino is an experimental ambient soundscape and drone music project by Andrzej S. Uzar. It originated in Rzeszów and is currently based in Warsaw, Poland.
The project’s name is inspired by a fictional location from Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago. Varykino symbolizes a complex mix of sanctuary, isolation, and the fleeting nature of happiness amidst historical and personal turmoil. It reflects themes of hope, loss, the passage of time, and the inaccessibility of the past.
In George Lucas's Star Wars, Varykino is the name of Padmé Amidala’s idyllic family estate, set by a serene lake on the planet Naboo.
Musically, My Varykino employs analog synthesizers, samplers, and effects to blend generated sounds with various sources, such as field recordings, to craft multi-textured, vibrant, and sometimes polyrhythmic compositions. These pieces incorporate both tonal and atonal elements, creating a rich and immersive auditory experience.
My Varykino's performances are live, no-computer acts, emphasizing the raw and organic nature of the soundscapes.
"Smell of warm asphalt after rain,
Déjà vus, magical items, and melancholia.
Infatuations and disillusionments,
Lost and found, and lost again.
It all must have been that way."
