About this Event

Rituals play a significant role in grounding the identities of members of the Jewish community in Singapore. Join us at the Chesed-El Synagogue to witness the various rituals that take place throughout the life-cycle of a member of the Jewish community from birth to death.

Meet Rabbi Nissim Zawady!

Hello everyone, I am Rabbi Nissim! Judaism has taken me across the globe – from Colombia (my hometown) to Israel and from Greece to Singapore. No matter where I go, I always feel the warmth and generosity of the local Jewish community and Singapore is no exception! It is this spirit of generosity that touches me time after time, giving me the motivation to do what I do.

Since the pandemic began, the synagogue has had to halt many of its activities. By His grace, at the end of the pandemic, I hope to bring back the congregants to attend services at the synagogue and strengthen the sense of community and belonging here! I look forward to bring you around the synagogue this coming October and share with you our prayers and practices!

More about Chesed-El Synagogue

Singapore is home to two synagogues - the Maghain Aboth Synagogue at Waterloo Street and the Chesed-El Synagogue at Oxley Rise. Both places of worship were gazetted as national monuments in 1988.

Chesed-El means “Mercy of God”. The synagogue has been the centre of many Jewish activities. These include the 3 main festivals of Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot, as well as the Jewish New Year and the Day of Atonement. According to Rabbi Nissim, there are approximately 2,000 Jewish people in Singapore today. With a strong belief that youths hold the key to the Jewish community’s future, the synagogue works tirelessly to teach them and cultivate a strong sense of belonging.
