Paul Mills will be tracing his life’s journey in which he started out as a chemical engineer, but ended up as an award-winning musician and record producer. The process by which he made this significant transition and the resulting joy that it delivered to his life’s journey are covered through anecdotes, pictures and musical examples. After the talk, Paul will entertain us with a short set of music featuring songs by some of the well-known artists he has produced as well as some of his own compositions.
Bio
Paul Mills has been part of the Canadian folk music scene and recording industry for over 50 years. Early in his career, he worked as a producer for CBC Radio and, among other things, created and produced the folk music program, “Touch the Earth” that was hosted by Sylvia Tyson and aired nationally from 1974 to 1980.
He has produced more than 200 albums working with artists such as the late Stan Rogers (all but one of Rogers’ albums were produced by Mills), children’s entertainers Sharon, Lois and Bram , Ron Hynes, and John Allan Cameron. He is a founding partner of the Borealis Recording Company and he owned and operated his own production company and recording studio called The Millstream for 20 years.
Paul is also an experienced performer. He is an accomplished guitar player and singer with a repertoire consisting of a wide variety of folk and roots-based music- both original and covers. His songs range from side splitting funny to achingly poignant.
In addition to his work as a producer and performer, Paul has served on various Boards: he is the Past president of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (now Folk Music Ontario) and has served on the Boards of Folk Music Canada and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Until recently, he was the Chair of the Board of the Home County Music and Art Festival in London.
In June of 2017, Paul was named as a Member of the Order of Canada, a prestigious honour given to those whose life work has made a significant contribution to Canada. Also, in recognition of his many years of work and accomplishments as a record producer and performer, in 2021 Paul was inducted into the London Music Hall of Fame.
