About the Huni Kuin:

The Huni Kuin people live in the lush Western Amazon of Brazil and Peru, and their culture is filled with ancient wisdom on medicinal plants, spiritual practices, music, and crafts. Though they've faced immense challenges, like being forced from their land, they've secured their rights and territorial heritage. They're now dedicated to preserving and reviving their rich heritage with festivals, gatherings, and the passing of wisdom from elders to the youth. The world recognizes their contribution to Amazon conservation and their invaluable traditional knowledge. They're renowned for their plant medicine expertise and have inspired interest in its use worldwide.

Despite facing significant challenges, including a lack of land and being surrounded by cattle farms, Huni Kuin communities have launched initiatives to reforest the area and preserve its natural resources.

Pajé (traditional medicne man) Ikakuru is from the village of Boa Vista, located in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil on the Jordao River. He is the grandson of Romão Sales (one of the main guardians of the sacred and ancient Huni Kuin chants of Nixi Pae) and the grandson of the 105 year old Master Kaxinawa Shaman Mukaya (in memoriam), from whom he learned the traditional chants and prayers of Nixi Pae. He is the Spiritual Leader and Pajé of his village Boa Vista. His knowledge of the medicinal plants, sacred chants, and healing arts is vast and he works extensively with the youth of his community to share the knowledge of their culture and ancestry. He is the founder and president of the Yube Inu institute where he works together with other villages and tribal leaders to promote projects for the wellness of his people. He is also the founder of the Yube Nawa Ainbu school in his village where studies of forest medicines and spiritual dietas are conducted.

Batani is the daughter of Chief Elias of Aldeia Boa Vista and Mestra Rufina, one of the great teachers of Huni Kuin weaving. Batani is also a member of Yube Nawa Ainbu, a female group that studies traditional Huni Kuin chants, which has greatly strengthened the role of Huni Kuin women as healers. Batani's voice brings a beautiful feminine force and energy to Nixi Pae ceremonies which she guides together with her husband Ikakuru.

Bukun Samakey is the elder son of Chief Tuim Nova Era of Aldeia Espelho da Vida (on the Humaita River) and has been a young apprentice of the healing traditions of the Huni Kuin people since a very early age. His teachers include Chief Tuim Nova, his uncle Pajé Ninawa Pai-da-Mata, and Pajé Tuwe Huni Kuin, who are all great political and spiritual leaders among the Huni Kuin people. He has been guiding ceremonies in Brazil and around the world and continues to undertake the Muka dieta (his longest Muka dieta having lasted three months thus far). He will be travelling together with his wife and young child and is considered a young leader-in-the-making among the Huni Kuin people of the Humaita River.

Iba Huni Kuin is the younger brother of Chief Tuim Nova Era of Aldeia Espelho da Vida and a dedicated apprentice of the healing traditions of the Huni Kuin people. He has been guiding ceremonies throughout Brazil and continues to undergo the Muka dieta. He will be visiting Europe for the very first time.

Abraham Lozanobrioso received a vision almost 20 years ago, in which an indigenous elder blew medicine into his nose with a pipe and said to him: “You too are a child of the forest.” In this vision, he then found himself falling and becoming submerged in a pot filled with dark brown liquid. He knew next to nothing about the medicines of the forest at that time, but participated in ceremonies with Santo Daime before re-locating to the Amazon Rainforest. He has been a “child of the forest” ever since, living and studying with maestros and pajés of medicine traditions throughout the Amazon region including the Shipibo-Conibo, the Huni Kuin, the Yawanawa, and the Ashaninka. He has also studied the medicine and healing traditions of the Huichol, the Lakota, and the Mazateca people. He is gifted with remarkable clarity of sight and the grace of the cura (healing), able to visually see and balance the body, mind and spirit of the participants in ceremony.
