Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins Light Up Mount Vernon with Laughter and TraditionThis Hanukkah season, audiences of all ages are invited to experience Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, a joyous, laugh-filled celebration of Jewish storytelling, humor, and community. Performances will be held at the First Street Community Center (221 First Street NE, Mount Vernon) on November 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on November 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Directed by Uri Lessing, this ensemble comedy reimagines the beloved Eric Kimmel story through the lens of Yiddish theatre, blending slapstick, improvisation, and audience participation. “Every performance is a little different,” says Lessing. “It’s Monty Python meets Mel Brooks—with a dash of shtetl charm.”
Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins follows the clever trickster Hershel as he uses wit and courage to outsmart a band of mischievous goblins who’ve taken over a village synagogue. The show celebrates the resilience, humor, and light that define the Hanukkah story and the vibrant Jewish folklore that emerged from Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
This production is designed for families, children, and anyone who loves a good laugh. Audience members can expect to be part of the action, keeping alive the participatory spirit of traditional Yiddish theatre while enjoying a story that shines with warmth and humor.
