11-12: Musicality Advanced Basics: This is where it all starts! This class will set you up for success for the whole day and will help you in understanding what musicality means to a swing dancer. This is an introduction class on how swing music works, how it breaks down and how to dance to it. This will include understanding AABA formatting and why it is important in your dance as well as how to start listening for the format in songs and how to dance to it.
1215-115: Hit that break: This class is exactly what it sounds like! As we grow in our swing dancing adventure, we start to hear and/or feel things that tell us “a break coming”. This class will focus on how to listen for those breaks in the music, and how to hit them every time. This class is both a vocab class and a dive into hearing those stops that appear in swing music.
1:15-2:45: Lunch presentation with Geoffrey Miller: music from the musicians’ point of view. Geoff is joining us to talk all about what goes into creating danceable music of all types, how swing dancing can cross music types easily, Musicians process in everything from writing to solos to playing for dancers vs. other audiences and everything in between... Basically, whatever else he wants to share and talk about! And of course, he is bringing his guitar ! Bring your questions about everything you have ever wanted to ask the musicians we all know and love! Geoff is an amazing musician, writer and composer and an even better dude
245-345: Call and Response and musical playtime: This class focuses on communication with your partner and working with them to have a conversation based on what you are both hearing in the music. We will play with trading off musical engagement as well as learning vocab and then using it right away with your partner. This class also will focus on dancing to different themes in the music.
4-5: Musical Choreo: Harrison and Kelli are going to put together a bit of choreo that “hits all the main musical intricacies” to a song of their choosing. This class will tie in all the main focuses of the day, because the more your body dances to the music the better it will get to responding naturally to what is happening within it on a more musical level.
