My building in Centre Market was built in 1872 by a German stone mason. The place has been repeatedly listed as a Saloon on the old Sanborn Fire Maps of the Victorian and Edwardian Periods. However, this didn't appear to be any old low brow establishment that dotted this district back in the day. The list of owners included council members, board of education members and other esteemed members of Wheeling Society. But, as is often the case, a pretty veneer can hide a checkered past. I've found articles about gambling rings being raided upstairs, and allusions to there being ladies of the night working the premises. One owner's wife was possibly the daughter of a notorious Wheeling Madame. Did the apple fall far from the tree? And with a cigar shop next door, what more could a Victorian gentleman want for? But one thing that all the owners seemed to have in common was a love of live music. In fact, in newspaper adverts from 1878-1896 I found at least 10 different newspaper mentions of Soirees, Grand Musical Nights, & Entertaining Evening Gatherings.
And a century later, a few years before I bought the place, it was Rose Recording Studio. This place was built for Music & Entertainment! So let's bring it back to life and party like it's 1888! Or at least just have a laid back, fun, comfortable & enjoyable evening in an amazingly intimate Private Lounge.
I promise you'll find nothing else like this in Wheeling!
