Music Under Glass with Shawnee Dez featuring Moody Umbra: There's Solace in the Shadows
About this Event

Join us for the Music Under Glass 2022 music concert series!

Moody Umbra: There’s Solace in the Shadows explores the unconscious mind as a means of piecing together the true memories, repressed desires and unspoken secrets which make us whole. Performed by Shawnee Dez, this work is inspired by their debut project Moody Umbra.

Drawing on distorted remembrance, Moody Umbra aims to confront ideas of self in contrast with projections of the ego. As attendees experience the performance, they are asked to examine fragments of themselves that may be hidden or repressed. It is through this process of acknowledging and naming that we are truly able to see ourselves wholly, both shadow and ego.

About the Artist:

From Chicago’s South Side, singer/songwriter Shawnee Dez intently engages her audience, encouraging energy exchanges. Dez is mostly concerned with ancestral knowledge, and performance as an opportunity to channel, to communicate with the past and future. Her dynamic multi-ranged alto melodic sound, paired with powerful grit will shake your soul.

Dez’s work centers youth and community advocacy. When off the stage, she activates spaces for creative youth to express unapologetically. In June 2020, Shawnee organized a massive Pre-Juneteenth Black Joy bike ride through Chicago’s Metropolitan area. This ride was a symbol of liberation and mobility, during a time where many were heavily limited by the horrifying effects of two pandemics: systemic racism and COVID-19.
