WHAT DOES A MUSIC THERAPY SESSION LOOK LIKE?
The music therapy session lasts approximately 60 minutes, and starts and ends with the same Hello and Goodbye songs each time, to aid in settling in and in transitions. There is usually a parachute play activity to release energy and warm up. Singing, dancing, creative movement with or without props such as hoops and scarves, , drumming, instrument play, and music games, are other music interventions used in the group. Depending on the group ages, goals, and abilities, there might be lyric analysis or song-writing, for emotional expression, relaxation and stretching for a cool down, music listening, and learning to play an instrument such as guitar, keyboard, recorder, ukulele, autoharp or other instrument. Anyone who has an instrument at home can bring it and use it. Music that is special and enjoyed by each participant will be used if possible. There will also be a short water break in the middle of the hour.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
This program is geared towards the youth special needs population. Music brings people together, and a music therapy group can accommodate a wide variety of ages successfully. Family members and friends are welcome to participate. We ask that you provide assistance where needed as we do not have the staff to accommodate for individual assistance. This is a group session with one instructor.
