“Potent, vibrato-drenched vocals.”—DownbeatFronted by “powerhouse vocalist” (Downbeat Magazine) and flamenco dancer Tamar Ilana, the Toronto-based band Ventanas reimagines age-old Sephardic songs, Mediterranean melodies, and flamenco grooves.
Inspired by a childhood touring the world with her mother, an ethnomusicologist, Ilana sings about migration and identity in Ladino, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hebrew, French, Romani, and Arabic, delivering an enchanted, dynamic mix of ancient ballads, contemporary interpretations, and original compositions.
In 2024, they released their 4th album, “Azadi,” featuring original compositions with strong influences from their unique combination of cultural and musical backgrounds including Flamenco, Sephardic, Balkan, Greek, Turkish, Jazz, Pop, Classical, and Mediterranean folk.
ABOUT: Founded in 2011, Tamar Ilana & Ventanas performs original and traditional material in over 20 languages, weaving in and out of fiery flamenco dance and music, Greek, Turkish, and Sephardic love songs, upbeat Bulgarian dance tunes, and lyrical original melodies, while leading captive audiences through windows into other lands, times and cultures. “Azadi” received 4 CFMA nominations, and have toured across Canada, the US, Colombia, Portugal, Ireland, and Spain.
Happy Hour in the J Cafe: wine/beer, refreshments and concessions.
