I am beyond thrilled to be traveling to Athens next week to share and discuss the extraordinary field recordings made by James A. Notopoulos in Western Crete in May 1953. I'll be speaking at Cotsen Hall at the Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies - a double honor, as Notopoulos was based there during his fellowship with the Guggenheim and the American Philosophical Association. I've spent so much time listening to and thinking about these recordings and Notopoulos's life's work: during my PhD program at Harvard, through my postdoctoral appointment at the Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature (during which I oversaw the digitization and cataloguing of the materials), on my trips to repatriate the recordings to the communities in which they were made, and all the times that I've played this music for and with friends... it's truly a wonderful thing to be invited to share my ideas and both play the recordings and perform some of the repertoire with dear friends. If you're in Athens on March 4, come shake off your post-Clean Monday blues with us! And if you're elsewhere, you can watch via a live stream on YouTube.
