Join a casual hunt for furtive fungi, and discover the variety of species that can be found at Hazard Railway, led by Links with Nature Conservation Trainee Jonathan!
‘Tis the season of the ‘shroom! The leaves have begun to fall and the air turns cool, but flourishing amongst it all are these mycological marvels. Did you know, here in the UK we have over 15,000 species of fungi?! While they may often go unnoticed in our woodlands, hidden underground or tucked away in the shade of a rotting log, in fact, they are involved (up to the gills you could say) in many areas of our ecosystems. Whether it be breaking down dead wood and other organic matter to improve soil quality, or actually forming a linked network of roots with nearby trees to help them to absorb nutrients and water.
Join us for a woodland walk around Hazard Railway, one of Links with Nature’s 12 greenspaces in the Coalfields area, to track down, and with some luck identify, some of the fungi that call it home.
We will be meeting at the Rainton Meadows visitor centre, but attendees will then be transported to the nearby Hazard Railway site, in East Rainton. Due to transport availability 7 spaces are available to book. Booking is required to attend.
Facilities including toilets and the Meadows Cafe are available at Rainton Meadows Visitor Centre where we will initially meet, but we will not have access once on site at Hazard Railway.
Please wear weather appropriate clothing and footwear (walking boots/wellies) the only other thing to bring is an enthusiasm for fungi!
