Heritage Malta is pleased to announce the final edition of Museums by Candlelight for this year, promising an experience more magical than ever before. For the first time, this special evening event will take place across the historical places of Rabat and Mdina, transforming their timeless sites into a luminous stage of history, art, and culture.On Saturday 20th September, from 7pm until midnight, visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore three exceptional sites: Domvs Romana, St Paul’s Catacombs, and the National Museum of Natural History, all beautifully illuminated by candlelight and animated by live performances, music, and an enchanting atmosphere.
For a donation of just €3, visitors will enjoy exclusive access to all three heritage sites. Each site will be beautifully illuminated by the soft, flickering glow of candlelight and brought to life with live music, captivating performances, and an atmosphere that promises to be truly unforgettable.
The Domvs Romana offers rare insight into the domestic life of a Roman aristocratic family, with its intricate mosaics and historic artefacts housed in Malta’s first purpose-built archaeological museum, opened in 1882.
At St Paul’s Catacombs, guests can journey through Malta’s earliest and most extensive evidence of early Christianity, with underground burial chambers dating back to Punic, Roman, and Byzantine times.
Meanwhile, the National Museum of Natural History, set within an 18th-century Baroque palace, features remarkable exhibits such as a mummified Nile crocodile, the skull of a False Killer Whale, a fossilised crocodilian head discovered in Gozo, and a tooth from the extinct Giant White Shark.
Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as the event involves walking between venues and exploring each location on foot.
