Join us for a lecture on the ladies in St Andrews who played golf in the early 1900s.
About this Event

The Doctor thought she should play golf. Ladies of leisure: The forgotten women golfers of St Andrews.

Jane’s talk will introduce the audience to the ladies in St Andrews who played golf in the early 1900s. Some belonged to the St Rule Club or were resident in the town. Others attended St Leonards School.

The talk will focus on the lives of these women, many of whom played in the early Scottish Ladies Golf Championships and would have been known in the town, at that time.

Jane will also highlight other aspects of their lives, away from the golf course, campaigning for the right to vote, working in France during WWI and volunteering for the SLGA.

Jane Claydon trained at Dartford College of Physical Education. In 1975 she was appointed Head of the Physical Education Department at St Leonards School, in St Andrews.

Jane spent a significant part of her working career at St Leonards, as a Housemistress and administrator. Her final post was Deputy Head. During her time at the school she had access to the extensive archive at the St Leonards. Following the publication of her book, St Leonards: Cradle of Lacrosse in 2009 she has delivered presentations in the UK, the USA and Canada about how lacrosse for women began at St Leonards in 1890. Jane was President of Lacrosse Scotland for a decade after her retirement and she set up the Lacrosse Scotland Hall of Fame in 2013.

More recently Jane produced a booklet about the 9 hole golf course at St Leonards laid out in 1893 by Tom Morris.

In the last two years she has undertaken some research about the members of St Rule, who played golf in the early part of the 20th century. Jane is a member of the Management Committee at St Rule.

This lecture will take place in our Museum galleries, with doors opening from 6.30pm for refreshments. The lecture will begin at 7pm, and there will be opportunity to view our temporary exhibition Pass It On: Women’s Experiences in Golf after the lecture.
