Uncovering women’s personal experiences of playing club golf in Scotland c.1945-1995Women have been recorded playing golf in Scotland as early as 1738, when two married women competed against each other on Bruntsfield Links, with their husbands as caddies. Despite this we know very little about their personal experiences of playing golf; what inspired them to take up the sport, the challenges they faced, and what it meant to be a woman golfer. Existing historiography has predominantly focused on the early development of women’s golf, or has provided a chronological account of the history of the sport from an international perspective, focusing largely on elite, upper class and pioneering golfers.
In January 2020, PhD student Lauren Beatty embarked on a research project with Glasgow Caledonian University and the R&A World Golf Museum, to uncover women’s personal experiences of playing club golf across Scotland, during the period 1945-1995. As she approaches the end of this study, this lecture discusses her research journey; how she approached her research, the challenges and light bulb moments she faced, and most importantly, it shares some of the hidden voices recorded as oral histories for the study.
T his lecture will take place in the Museum galleries, with doors opening from 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tea and coffee will be available before the lecture. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speaker, and the talk will be filmed for our YouTube channel and shown later.
