About this Event
What is the meaning of true greatness? Is it merely a measure of one’s successes or is it how one achieves them?
John Ball grew up a humble farmer, a modest man, but one with a prodigious talent. Perfecting his game at The Royal Liverpool Golf Club he took the world by storm in 1890 by becoming the first amateur to win the Open Championship. He would go on to win a record eight amateur championships.
In time he would befriend the games’ finest, Young Tom and Old Tom Morris and would fight in the Boer war. Old Tom said of him that ‘he was the greatest amateur in the world’, and yet that was before any of his championship successes.
Loved almost worshipped by thousands from his home town of Hoylake and across the nation, John Ball never wanted the praise that was lavished upon him.
Alistair Noakes tells his story at his talk at the R&A World Golf Museum at 7pm, Thursday 11th July 2024. All are welcome. Doors open at 6.30pm for refreshments
