Northern giant hornets, or murder hornets, are probably the most sensational non-natives to invade Whatcom County. They are a threat not just to honeybees but also to many native bees that our flora depends on for pollination. In this presentation, Cassie Cichorz will cover the northern giant hornet’s biology, detail the threats, and highlight eradication efforts. She’ll also describe some other significant pests of our flora and food crops, including the spongy moth (formerly, gypsy moths), and emerging pests of concern such as the Japanese beetle and spotted lantern fly. Cassie will explain how you can detect, prevent the spread, and protect Washington’s resources from invasive species. There will be preserved specimens to examine and handouts too. Cassie Cichorz is Outreach Specialist with the Washington State Department of Agriculture. This is an in-person meeting! In-person meetings begin at 7pm in the Sustainable Living Center education room at the ReStore (2309 Meridian St.). The entrance is off the back alley and the SLC is upstairs.
