JANUARY 14
"Margaret and Hugo Dixon" with Jane Faquin, retired Director of Education, Dixon Gallery and Gardens
Jane Ward Faquin is an independent curator and art historian from Memphis, TN who has a special interest in American and French Impressionist art. In 2014-15 Faquin curated a show that featured American Impressionist artist Charles Courtney Curran (1861-1942) whose work travelled to three museums. In 2010 she created a similar project that featured the work of Helen M. Turner of New Orleans. She also wrote the accompanying catalogues for both exhibitions. Before becoming a freelance curator, Mrs. Faquin was the curator of education at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis for 15 years. Earlier she also coordinated the volunteer effort for the Ramses exhibition in 1986-87 for the Junior League of Memphis, which at the time was the largest volunteer effort ever in Tennessee. That launched her museum career.
Mrs. Faquin’s most recent collaboration with the Dixon opened in 2019 and featured the work of two Boston artists: William McGregor Paxton and his wife Elizabeth Okie Paxton. Faquin has also done research on several southern women artists that were included in an exhibition that travelled to Memphis and Jackson, Mississippi from the Johnson Collection of Southern Art in Spartanburg, SC. She has also contributed articles to both national and regional periodicals about a variety of art historical subjects.
Before joining the "museum world," Faquin taught history, English, and art history at several area high schools. She holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of South Carolina. She has judged a number of juried art shows in West Tennessee and East Arkansas.
She is a widow with two grown children and lives in Memphis. She enjoys reading, gardening, travel, genealogy, and playing Mah Jong, although that not lately. She also loves spending time in Nashville with her children and four grandchildren.
Wednesdays can be especially busy at Park and Cherry. If you're attending Munch and Learn, please plan ahead and place your lunch orders early. To reduce disruptions during the lecture, guests are asked to bring their own food from the cafe to the auditorium. You may request to-go containers to make the trip to your seat easier.
▶ Pre-order by calling (901) 312-1277.
