Vania Barraza Toledo, Professor of Spanish, Department of World Language, University of Memphi
Vania Barraza is Professor of Spanish at the University of Memphis. Her research focuses on Latin American literature and culture, with a particular emphasis on film, gender, and sexuality studies. She is the author of El cine en Chile (Cuarto Propio, 2018), a book that examines contemporary Chilean cinema, and Insubordinadas (RIL 2010), which centers on Latin American women’s writing. More recently, she has co-edited Female Agency in Films Made by Latin American Women (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) in collaboration with María Helena Rueda, and she also co-edited Chilean Film in the Twenty-First Century World (Wayne State University Press, 2020) with Carl Fischer. She has been awarded a spring 2025 Crosstown Arts Residency Program to develop her scholarly videographic essay: “‘Para verte mejor': Gaze and Aesthetics in Chilean Bildungsfilms.”
