Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam – A Feast of Carnatic Music! In its endeavor to present rich hues of the Indian performing arts Banyan Tree has launched several thematic festivals in its journey of more than 28 glorious years. Dakshinayan, the festival dedicated to Carnatic music (South Indian Classical Music), was one of the most sought-after events that was presented for 16 years in Northern India (Mumbai, Delhi and Pune). Inspired by the famous Chennai Music season, four years ago, Banyan Tree enhanced the experience of Dakshinayan by creating an aptly titled Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam that is presented in the pious Margazhi month. In this month, Earth is the closest to the sun, so the maximum pull of the sun’s gravity happens at this time. That is the effect the Margazhi month has on the human system – it pulls you from the base. It is a time to bring balance and stability to the system. One of the ways to bring stability is by practicing of Indian classical music. This month is considered very significant for spiritual Sadhna, also has several festivals and of course lends itself to Carnatic music concerts too since most of the compositions in this genre are deeply devotional. In the past four years, Banyan Tree’s Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam has presented the best of stalwarts, maestros in the making as well as some brilliant young artists. Complimenting the experience with a feast of south Indian food through the day by one of the very popular caterers. This festival has received an overwhelming response year after year. The idea behind this festival is that, all the lovers of Carnatic music who cannot be in Chennai for the famous Margazhi season can now have the feast of Carnatic music right here in Mumbai with their own Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam. The festival has undoubtedly become one of the most awaited festivals and talk of the town event of the city. So, Mumbai will once again experience a feast for the senses with brilliant music for the ears, authentic south Indian food for the taste buds, most beautiful Kanjeevaram sarees for the eyes... with this 2-day Carnatic Music Festival.
