Info: This session will survey multiple topics relevant to speech, voice, breathing, and swallowing functions related to oral cancer and its treatments. Topics will include pre-operative evaluation and counseling considerations, care pathways from acute hospital setting to survivorship, with additional focus on subsite site-specific functional implications and approaches to rehabilitation (e.g., tongue vs. palate). Both didactic and case-based learning options will be provided. Additional implications of surgical rehabilitation and timing of adjuvant treatment modalities (i.e., chemotherapy and radiation therapy) will be highlighted.

Info: This session will review specific sequelae of oral cancer related to physical therapy including specific evidence-based treatments used by the Fred Hutch physical therapy team, with focus on treatment of head-neck lymphedema, scar tissue, fibrosis management, and exercise.

Info: This presentation will highlight the nutritional challenges faced by patients with cancers of the oral cavity. We will provide an overview of common treatment modalities in the context of their implications for nutrition status and intake. Topics will include indications for enteral nutrition (referencing NCCN guidelines for head and neck cancers), strategies to maintain hydration and prevent weight loss/malnutrition, and approaches to recovery following treatment. Special attention will be given to interdisciplinary collaboration and the dietitian’s role in supporting patients through every stage of care.

Info: Moderated by Hanna Hunter, MD, panelists weigh in on complex oral cancer cases requiring multidisciplinary input related to speech & swallowing function, nutrition, head-neck lymphedema, trismus, ADLs, and functional mobility.

Info: A head-neck surgeon and a physiatrist discuss approaches to maximizing function in oral cancer patients. Surgical approaches to optimizing post-operative function and medical approaches to improving post-treatment pain and disability will be highlighted.

Info: This presentation will provide an overview of maxillofacial prosthetics and discuss a variety of intraoral prostheses that assist and improve speech and function of the cancer, trauma or congenital anomaly patients (i.e., obturators, palatal drop, palatal lift, nasopharyngeal obturators, tongue prostheses, and other prostheses).

Info: A social worker and psychiatrist discuss approaches to patient co-management and explore implications of co-morbid mental health conditions in patients with oral cancers. Topics will include medications and therapeutic interventions that non-mental health providers can use to improve the mental health of their patients, approaches to individual therapy, and the larger social worker's role in helping patients navigate resources and advocacy supports in the current social climate.

Panelists from nutrition, social work, psychiatry, and rehabilitation psychology weigh in on challenging cases where behavioral health, resource constraints, and patient belief systems can serve as barriers to oral cancer treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Info: Jonathan Canonizado, MSW, LICSW is a THN/GU oncology social worker at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center with over 14 years of experience in the field of social work. He holds a Master of Social Work and is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). Throughout his career, Jonathan has provided care across a range of settings, including inpatient med/surg units, organ transplant, dialysis clinics and nonprofit organizations, specializing in care coordination, crisis intervention, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as solution-focused brief therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy. For the past two years, Jonathan has focused on supporting individuals diagnosed with cancer, bringing a deep commitment to person-centered, culturally responsive care. Passionate about advocacy and connection, Jonathan is dedicated to elevating the role of social work in oncology and fostering resilience in the face of profound health challenges.
