About this Event
New Games are (physical) cooperative games in which EVERYBODY WINS! They can be adapted to be culturally relevant and trauma-informed, as well as for age, language, culture, and ability differences.
The games are excellent for use as icebreakers—they can help a collection of individuals feel more like a cohesive group. New Games can enhance communication, conflict resolution, and team building.
Refugees, immigrants, and other newcomers often experience the effects of trauma, displacement, or other adverse life experiences. Receiving community members may not know how to engage with their new neighbors. New Games can help ease the tension of unfamiliar lifeways and overcome hesitancy to engage with others. Language and cultural barriers are also lessened. This process unfolds more naturally when game leaders or facilitators are from backgrounds similar to those of the participants. So we are issuing a special invitation to people of color.
New Games are (physical) cooperative games
which sometimes include competition.
The main difference is that everyone wins!
No one is left out, and no one is humiliated or eliminated,
regardless of age, ability, size, or gender. New Games are
easily adapted to include players with disabilities, different
cultures, or even different languages. Over 30 New Games
(15+ in a one day workshop) will be taught with the
opportunity to learn how to lead them with expert positive
feedback. There is an opportunity for you to practice
leading New Games with family and friends near the end
of the workshop. Appropriate and adaptable for any age,
subject area, or work situation.
New Games, sometimes with adaptation, can be used to
teach subject matter. They can be used as energisers to
pick a group up when the energy is flagging. The games are
excellent for use as ice breakers - they can make a collection
of individuals feel like a cohesive group. Finally, we will
explore how the games can be used for deeper work,
such as improving communication, conflict resolution,
and team building.
