A seasoned veteran who traverses classical and modern dance, iconic Hong Kong dancer and choreographer Mui Cheuk-yin is the perfect embodiment of “east meets west” aesthetics. In 1998, at the invitation of legendary dancer Pina Bausch, she performed her early solo works 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘈 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 (1986) and 𝘌𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 (1995). At the 2025 Hong Kong Arts Festival, Mui will re-create these two pieces, along with 𝘈𝘴 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘴 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 (1994), presenting three solos which have become modern dance classics in Hong Kong.
With a background in Chinese classical dance, Mui experienced her first breakthrough when she created her critically acclaimed first solo piece 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘈 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮, which combined her classical training with a newfound passion for modern dance following her studies in New York. Inspired by Pai Hsien-yung’s eponymous short story, the performance portrays the forlornness of a retired Kun opera singer with a confident grace.
Not easily content, Mui then returned to New York, this time to master the art of postmodern dance and contact improvisation in particular. Soon, the piece 𝘌𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 was born, a robustly beautiful work that uses a traditional oil-paper umbrella and shredded paper to create an ethereal atmosphere onstage.
Her 1994 piece 𝘈𝘴 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘴 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 is a daring performance that draws from the concept of improvisation, turning aluminium foil—an everyday item—into a spectacular installation reminiscent of a shimmering waterfall, which sets off a series of organic, unscripted interactions with the material.
Capturing the essence of Mui’s poetic and creative energy, these three solo pieces are not to be missed by any lovers of dance. Mui’s performance is part of the Icons in Motion series that celebrates great dance soloists from across the world.
