What began as a spontaneous trip in 2017 has grown into an unforgettable tradition. Over the years, some legends have joined every time and many new faces have discovered the magic of Mueller Hut for the first time.We’re incredibly lucky to have this experience in our backyard. People travel from all over the world to hike in these mountains and for many, Mueller Hut is the highlight of their journey.
What continues to surprise me is how this adventure seems to attract the most wonderful humans. There’s something about the mountain - its energy, its challenge, its beauty - that brings us together. In facing the climb side by side, we find natural connection. Friendships spark. Sometimes even relationships. And the sense of shared achievement, in the raw presence of nature, binds it all together.
Once again, we’ve secured all 28 bunks in the hut for our crew. You’ve got two options for getting there:
Arrive Thursday and camp at White Horse Hill (right at the track start), soaking in the stars and slowing down before the climb.
Or leave early Friday from Christchurch and aim for a 10am departure up the trail (allow ~4 hrs drive).
The hike itself is steep not too long - achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness and good footwear. Do your research on the track to make sure you are prepared. Take your time, enjoy the views, and the mountain will reward you.
And then there’s the hut. That’s where the magic happens. Conversations over candlelight. Music. Shared kai. The surreal sight of Mount Cook. Avalanches rumbling across the valley. Cheeky kea flying overhead. And the comforts of gas cooking and a warm bed, tucked into the heart of Aotearoa’s rugged landscape.
