This lunchtime lecture will be an overview of the some of the main talking points of the experience of the fighting on the Western Front during the Great War in 1916, with special emphasis on North Lincolnshire's involvement.We will look at the reputation of Field Marshall Haig and the "Lions led by Donkeys debate" and the experience of the "Grimsby Chums" one of the famous "Pals" battalions formed at the outset of the War, during the first day of the Battle of The Somme.
