“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.” —Thich Nhat Hanh (The Miracle of Mindfulness)
Awareness of breath is often taught as the starting point for learning meditation. It is also an essential, ongoing practice that connects mind to body and connects oneself to the world.
In the breath we can touch our own life and observe the passing of time. Because respiration is a physical process that can operate both consciously and unconsciously, awareness of breath helps the mind stay in contact with the embodied self. Breathing can also be a reminder of our interconnectedness with other life on the planet if we consider how each respiration receives the gift of oxygen from photosynthesizing plants and returns to them the carbon dioxide that they use to grow. Observing the breath without trying to control it, builds the capacity for peace and acceptance elsewhere in our lives.
