The Mission to Seafarers is organising a key event during Singapore Maritime Week 2020 which covers the crucial topic of the impact of technology on seafarers’ mental health. We know that a seafarer with poor mental health can impact safety, efficiency and morale.
Further details
Building on the success of the event during London International Shipping Week (LISW2019) and in light of further developments, we propose to take this topic forward to a new platform of discussion in the Asian market. Asia is a key hub of shipping business and provides the largest number of seafarers as well. There are many manning and crewing agents located here with close interaction and understanding of seafarers’ needs.
Since September, more information has come to light in terms of research and activities, and the Mission invites the industry to share and learn, so what we can work together towards new levels of implementation the processes need to make these improvements.
It is well known that it’s in everyone’s interests to have a healthy and happy crew, which leads to a better working environment, safer conditions, improved staff retention, lower costs of repatriation, lower risk of accidents, better morale, the list of benefits is endless.
We know technology is developing at a rapid rate, but what impact does this have on our seafarers’ well-being? This conference looks at research, evidence and experience, and at what is actually happening on the ground. We hope this will inform and guide us all.
There is no doubt that the industry has embraced the health issues facing seafarers, and equally we are aware that with 1.5m seafarers and their families, this is no easy problem to solve quickly. But with insight into research as well as shared experiences we should all be working towards the same goal of improving seafarers’ mental wellbeing.
The Mission itself has developed a new programme under its sub-brand WeCare – addressing the impact of social media and financial concerns on seafarers’ health and safety at sea. We will be sharing this successful programme at the conference.
