About this Event
We’ll cover common brake issues, such as squealing and weak braking power, as well as cable tension and how to adjust it. Riders will also learn about gears, how to make simple adjustments for smooth shifting, and how to keep the drivetrain clean and functioning.
This is the third of five classes that explore bike maintenance and repair. Mix and match sessions to develop specific skills, or register for all five for a comprehensive introduction.
Related Classes
March 26: Suspension Setup and Maintenance
Learn how suspension works, and you’ll be rewarded with a supremely smooth ride. We’ll cover how to adjust suspension settings for different trail conditions (preload, rebound, and compression). Riders will also learn to clean and maintain forks and shocks.
April 5: Chain Maintenance
Learn how to clean and lubricate your bike’s chain for smooth, efficient rides. We’ll cover how to identify wear in a chain and decide when to replace it. After this session, riders will understand how to complete this work safely by using a chain checker tool.
About This Series
This five-week series for ages 8–14 features small-group instruction, hands-on learning, and interactive activities tailored to beginner and intermediate riders. Everyday language and visual demonstrations help them learn basic bike mechanics, build confidence in making quick fixes and basic repairs, and develop a deeper understanding of how their bikes work. Whether riders bring their own bikes or practice on bikes we provide. While classes are designed to build on each other and we recommend signing up for all five, there are no formal prerequisites, so please feel free to register for any or all sessions.
MTB for More
Mountain bikers are drawn to Hale’s rugged, varied terrain just miles outside Boston and we’re eagerly expanding our MTB programs. These programs focus on skill-building and ride time, and they’re growing thanks to a dedicated community that includes counselors, coaches, and volunteers.
Hale MTB Camp coaches campers based on their current skill level so they confidently progress throughout the summer and in the years ahead. Our Youth MTB Club provides small-group instruction and non-competitive, skills-oriented fun on a year-round basis. Intrepid Academy at Hale’s outdoor semester school program provides ride time for local high school students. We also offer a host of classes, clinics, and events for recreational riders, competitors, and families.
We’re thrilled that Hale is fast becoming a mountain biking destination, and with your help, we can do more. Please so Hale can make MTB opportunities available for all, and thank you for helping us advance the sport.
