Trip Leader: SamTrip Grade: 1+/2
Route: Climbed from the East Branch of the Hawdon River. From the Hawdon Biv follow the spur at the confluence of the streams until clear of the small gorge, then sidle towards the saddle at the head of the valley between the peaks.
Itinerary: Mt Valiant is a picturesque, seldom visited peak at the eastern boundary of Arthur's National Park. The trip will involve a 3 - 5hr walk from the Hawdon Shelter to the East Hawdon Biv. The next day will be a 3 - 5hr return climb of Mt Valiant then returning to the Hawdon Shelter. An overnight trip to ascend Mt Valiant from the East Hawdon Valley in Arthur's Pass National Park.
This trip will involve river bed (including river crossings), and rough bush tracks on day one. Day two will involve travel on steep scrub, scree, snow and rocky ridges. Mt Valiant is graded II,2 in the new Arthur's Pass Guide, but the technical difficulty will be dependent on snow conditions, certainly no more technical than grade 2.
Depart Christchurch and carpool where possible. 2hr drive from Christchurch.
Previous experience required: Basic crampon & ice axe use. Fit enough to carry and overnight pack for up to 10 hours
Gear required: Usual spring tramping gear for an overnight trip PLUS Ice axe, Crampons & Helmet. Avalanche kit may be required depending on Avalanche forecast. Own food and water. Make sure you have:
Sunhat/cap
Warm hat
Sunglasses/snow goggles
Insulation and waterproof layers for top and bottom
Waterproof insulated gloves
Waterproof, stiff soled boots
Ice axe - two tools
Crampons
Helmet
Harness
Avalanche kit
Overnight kit (S.bag, mat, tents, cooking equip)
Shared gear: Tents and cooking equipment
