About this Event
Treetops Hotel in Nyeri epitomizes resilience. This famous rustic treehouse hotel, with a history as captivating as the wildlife it overlooks, is set to reopen this May, marking its extraordinary third incarnation.
The story of Treetops began in 1932 when Eric Sherbrook Walker, inspired by the hunting platforms (machans) used in India, built a modesttwo-room treehouse in Aberdare National Park.
In 1954, the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA) burned it down. Undeterred, Treetops was rebuilt near the same waterhole, attracting a fashionable clientele. Observation lounges and ground-level hides offered a front-row seat to the drama of the African wilderness, providing unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities.
In February 1952, Princess Elizabeth was at Treetops when she learned of her father's passing and her ascension to the throne. A decade later, Kenya gained independence, marking a new chapter for both the Queen and the nation. This profound historical significance, combined with the reopening of Treetops, adds a layer of intrigue and reverence, making it a truly unique destination.
