Come one and all to join us on our annual visit to the Mt Angel Abbey Rare Manuscript Library. All ages are welcome, including children who are able to respectfully sit for hours in a lecture setting. This is a free event, though we will be writing a check for a donation to the Abbey which anyone can donate toward. You may also wish to allow yourself funds to purchase items at the bookstore/coffee shop and Brewery.
Dress nicely. This is an active Monastery and we are guests at their spiritual center. We want to be respectful and leave them willing to invite us back next year.
This event is an all day activity. Begin your journey as early as needed to ensure that you have adequate time to have your breakfast and your coffee or tea before arriving at 10:00AM at the small coffee shop and gift store located on the Mt Angle Abbey campus. The travel time from Eugene Springfield area is approximately an hour and a half.
Brother Albert Klotz will meet us there and we will travel on foot up the hill to the library. Those who are mobility impaired can be driven a little closer by someone in their travel party where there is an elevator available to reach the level of the library, but you will still need to travel about the equivalent of 2 city blocks to reach the library. Mobility carts are welcome.
Once at the library the presentation will begin at 10:30. Photos and videos are allowed. Seating is quite comfortable in padded chairs.
At noon there will be a break for Brother Albert to attend noon prayers. Anyone interested is invited to join him.
Prayers end about 12:20. At that time we will travel be car to the Mt Angel Abbey Brewery for lunch. You may opt to purchase lunch from their limited offering of food and drink, or you may bring your own. Seating indoors is available, but limited. There is plenty of outside seating available under a covered picnic area which has an outdoors heater. Depending on the weather this can still be a chilly experience, so plan to bring plenty of appropriate clothing. Brother Klotz will be our guest for lunch.
Once lunch is finished we will drive back up the hill to continue the presentation at the library.
At the completion of the presentation, if there is time, you may want to walk another couple of blocks to the Abbey's eclectic museum. This closes at 4:00PM.
At the end of the day we will all make our way back to our vehicles and return whence we came, left with great memories, a deeper understanding of medieval manuscripts, and many wonderful photographs!
Directions and maps will be added in the discussion section of this post.
