MSF Geo Week: Eastern Africa mapathon
Location: Pitman House
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) invites you to join our hybrid Missing Maps event (online and in-person) on November 20, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM at our office in Nairobi, Kenya or online.
This Mapathon is part of (OSM Geo Week). During this global initiative, partners, community groups, and map enthusiasts will unite to celebrate geography and contribute to MSF's humanitarian efforts.
We will focus on mapping the outskirts of Sokoto, Nigeria, to support MSF’s activities in combating —a neglected disease primarily affecting children under five living in poverty. This effort aims to reduce the need for surgical interventions by addressing one of the root causes of the disease: malnutrition.
Accurate maps are essential for MSF to locate and assist people in need. The project, founded by MSF, the American Red Cross, the British Red Cross, and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, leverages the power of volunteers to map underserved areas using OpenStreetMap. This open-source, crowd-sourced platform provides essential geographic data to help NGOs and responders reach vulnerable populations during crises.
How to Participate: Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation, including a link to join the event online.
Requirements for Mapping: Laptop, mouse & a stable internet connection
Note: This event offers two ways to participate: in-person or virtually. Slots are limited—30 for in-person attendance and 10 for virtual participation—allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
