About this Event
Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is recognized as one of his most iconic and enigmatic works. Remaining unfinished at his death in 1791, it is commonly accepted that its completion was accomplished by his student Franz Zaver Süssmayr, using notes and sketches left by Mozart. The hauntingly beautiful melodies and profound emotional depth in Requiem reflect themes of mortality and redemption. Notable sections include the intense “Dies Irae,” the sorrowful “Lacrimosa,” and the uplifting “Lux Aeterna.” Dramatic orchestration blends with intricate choral harmonies, capturing the listener’s imagination. Mozart’s Requiem continues to be a powerful and moving piece, frequently performed and celebrated for its sublime artistry and its poignant, mysterious origins.
The concert will open with Haydn’s Te Deum in C Major, a work that epitomizes the classical style. Composed in 1799, Te Deum begins with an exuberant choral declaration, followed by contrasting lyrical sections and culminating in a powerful, jubilant finale. Haydn’s mastery of counterpoint and harmonic richness is evident throughout, creating a majestic and uplifting composition that captures the celebratory essence of the liturgical text.
Soloists Talise Trevigne, Maria McDaniel Willathgamuwa, Richard Clement, and John LaForge will join the 130-voice MOS chorus and 35-piece orchestra in our performance of this memorable composition.
