About this Event

Where: Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston, TX AND Virtually on Zoom

In person space is limited to ensure the safety of our dancers and staff. If you do not feel safe to join us in person or cannot travel to Houston, we are also offering Zoom spots. You can learn from our faculty from the comfort of your home for a discounted price.

Who: Advanced dancers age 15 +

Pre-professional and professional dancers welcome.

Cost: $280 for in person (only 25 spots available)

$150 for virtual (unlimited)

We will be taking every precaution to ensure the students are safe and healthy throughout this workshop.

This means in-person registration will be limited and dancers will be required to follow all required additional health and safety protocols while attending our event. If you or your dancer is vaccinated, please bring your vaccine card to the workshop.

Dancers will be taking daily class with Moving Forward director, Madison Hicks, followed by two creative process rehearsals with our guest artist and emerging choreographer. Read about the artists below.

FACULTY:

Madison Hicks, originally from Dallas, TX, graduated from Booker T. Washington HSPVA in 2014. She received her BFA from The Juilliard School in May 2018 and her MFA in Choreography in 2021 from California Institute of the Arts. She is a freelance teacher, choreographer, and performer. She was a full-time company member with LA Dance Project under the direction of Benjamin Millepied for the 2018/2019 season. In 2020, she was a guest choreographer for Avant Chamber Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, and Mash-Up Contemporary Dance Company. In 2020 and 2021 she also choreographed three of Eleanor Kingston’s music videos and presented work at Boston Dance Festival and LA Dance Festival. In 2021, she will create a new work on New York Dance Project and be a guest teacher for LA Contemporary Dance Company’s Winter intensive and Adelphi University. In 2019, she had choreographic work showcased at Palm Desert Choreography Festival, Mash-Up's International Women's Day Festival, and the Theorists Festival along with premiering her solo work, "Sparkle with a K", at Navel in Downtown Los Angeles. She has been a resident choreographer for Booker T. Washington HSPVA Rep II Ensemble, The University of Texas at Austin, Center of Creative Arts, Houston MET Too, San Diego Civic Center, and The Windward School. Madison is currently a faculty member for Steps on Broadway, Icon Dance Awards, California Institute of the Arts, Project 21 and is also a faculty member and choreographer for Joffrey Southwest. Madison has created and is the director of Moving Forward Dallas, an innovative dance intensive and Non-Profit Organization for young artists. She was a 2013 YoungArts winner for modern dance, 2014 US Presidential Scholar in the Arts Nominee and a guest artist in the 2014 YoungArts Presidential Scholar Gala under the direction of Bill T. Jones. In January of 2017, she performed as a distinguished guest alumnus in the YoungArts annual Backyard Ball under the direction of Tony Yazbeck. She received a choreography award from YAGP in 2014 and had three choreographic works chosen to perform in The Choreographic Honors show at The Juilliard School. Madison was awarded the Gene Kelly Legacy Scholarship for her choreography and jazz technique in 2016. She was an Avant Chamber Ballet Women’s Choreography finalist and has also had works showcased at Periapsis Music and Dance and WestFest Dance Festival in New York City. She has performed works by Nacho Duato, Jiri Kylian, Emily Molnar, Kyle Abraham, Ohad Naharin, Peter Chu, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Aszure Barton, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Benjamin Millepied, and Pam Tanowitz.


GUEST ARTIST:

Norbert De La Cruz III (he/him/his) is a Filipino-American NY & LA-based freelance dance artist and choreographer. He was born in the Philippines and raised in Los Angeles. With a BFA in Dance from Juilliard and an MFA in dance from Hollins, his choreographic and teaching career has earned him a Princess Grace Award under the choreography fellowship, a Jerome Robbins Foundation N.E.W. grant, a Winning Works recognition form the Joffrey Academy of Dance, the Youth America Grand Prix’s Outstanding Choreographer Award, a featured choreographer at New York City Ballet’s NY Choreographic Institute and was featured as Dance Magazine’s top 25 to watch.


His extensive performance career includes dancing soloist roles for the Metropolitan Opera, Aszure Barton & Artists in Germany, Balletto Teatro di Torino of Italy, Santa Clarita Ballet, Lustig Dance Theatre, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Boca Tuya, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. He was the representative for Juilliard at the first annual Dizzy Feet Foundation Gala and was recently casted in the film adaptation of Tony-winning musical In The Heights. Since then, Norbert has been commissioned for new works from The Juilliard School, Hubbard Street 2, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Ballet X, Joffrey Academy of Dance, Tulsa Ballet II, Grand Rapids Ballet, and is currently developing 2 full-evening works for the Guggenheim’s Works and Process and for Seattle’s Olympic Ballet Theatre. www.NorbertDeLaCruziii.com IG: @Norbert.DeLaCruz.iii


EMERGING CHOREOGRAPHER:

Shadden Hashem is a recent graduate from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase. Prior to attending Purchase, Shadden graduated from the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas where she had the honor of being cast in the works of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Loni Landon, and Lar Lubovitch to name a few. At Purchase, Shadden has performed the works of José Limón, Ana Maria Lucaciu, Doug Varone, and more. Shadden also produces works of her own and most recently presented her senior project concert. Some of Shadden’s accomplishments include being named a Texas Young Master in 2016 as well as receiving the 2021 Outstanding Senior Award for Dance at SUNY Purchase. Shadden plans to pursue a professional career in contemporary dance as well as continue creating her own work on a larger scale. She also hopes to pursue her passion for photography and filmmaking.
