Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) (Col – 115 mins) Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) is a romantic comedy-drama directed by Blake Edwards, based on Truman Capote’s novella of the same name. The film stars Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, a free-spirited yet lonely socialite in New York City. George Peppard plays Paul Varjak, a struggling writer who becomes captivated by Holly’s charm and mystery. Patricia Neal portrays Paul’s wealthy benefactor, and Buddy Ebsen plays Doc Golightly, a figure from Holly’s past who reveals a hidden side of her life. Set against the backdrop of 1960s Manhattan, the film follows Holly’s quest for a glamorous life, symbolised by her visits to Tiffany & Co. Paul, drawn to her eccentric yet vulnerable nature, develops feelings for her, but Holly resists emotional attachment, believing financial security is her true goal. As their relationship deepens, she must decide between love and her dream of independence. Hepburn’s performance, particularly her rendition of ‘Moon River’, remains one of cinema’s most memorable moments. The film also popularised her iconic little black dress, designed by Givenchy. While widely beloved, the film has been criticised for Mickey Rooney’s offensive portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi. Despite this, Breakfast at Tiffany’s endures as a classic, known for its elegance, romance and themes of love, self-discovery and the pursuit of happiness.
