"Sordid Lives" (2000) tells, with a great deal of black humor, the story of a Texan family whose fragile order is finally shaken after the grandmother's death. Secrets, hurt egos, and repressed life plans come to light – including a son who has distanced himself from the rest of the family with his truth.
The film is based on the play of the same name by Del Shores, who staged his bittersweet grotesque with plenty of camp and a sensitivity for the abysmal. Leslie Jordan, Bonnie Bedelia, and Beth Grant, among others, shine in central roles; Olivia Newton-John surprises in an unusually raw role
"Sordid Lives" quickly became a cult favorite and not only spawned a (short-lived but memorable) prequel series, but also received a belated sequel in 2017 that brings things full circle—with familiar characters, new conflicts, and the tried-and-tested mix of drama, satire, and radical self-assertion.
