Join us as we explore the deep, dark realms of Butoh, the avant-garde performance art form of defiance that began in Japan in the wake of WWII, rising like a phoenix from the ashes of Hiroshima. Disrupting the status quo and subverting conventional aesthetic notions by leaning into tension and dissonance, Butoh taps into the subconscious to unearth raw emotions and recover the primal body. In this workshop, we’ll peel back layers of socialization and unravel the guts of what it means to be human through embodied exploration and movement via guided imagery and introspective suggestions, bringing awareness and acceptance to the uncomfortable messes we’d much rather sweep under the rug. For those looking to slow the f**k down and dismantle capitalistic notions of urgency and productivity and deepen their somatic perceptivity, nervous system capacity, attention to detail, patience, curiosity, and sense of wonder; look no further!

About our Facilitor
alvie (they/she // tee/hee) is a queer chronically-ill AuDHD gremlin shapeshifting between roles as interdisciplinary artist, caretaker, gardener, facilitator, disability justice organizer and rabble-rouser, forever yearning and churning, dreaming and scheming up how to build a better world with curiosity, play, improvisation and experimentation at the forefront of their creative explorations. Their M.O. as a performance artist, butoh dancer, and somanaut is to confront the elephant in the room, hold up a mirror and ask the important questions to allow a deep well of inner wisdom to be revealed and yielded as a source of empowerment and transformation. About Movement Incubator
Movement Incubator is an event series where a rotating cast of facilitators lead small groups through unpolished and experimental movement practices. We want to foster a community of folks who are curious about trying new things and are hungry to explore the edges of unrefined movement.

We will also have an air purifier running, and will provide plenty of COVID tests for you to take home for yourself, your cohabitants, neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones courtesy of Ohio Clean Air Coalition. Please stay home if you or someone you have shared air with recently is experiencing symptoms of illness, or if you or they have recently tested positive for any illness. Parking & Accessibility
Abide West is located in the studio space located behind Willow Room in Lakewood. The address is 15801 Detroit Avenue. There is free parking behind the building off Brockley Ave, and there's a cute li'l Abide West sign above the correct door towards the back of the building.You'll have to climb just a few steps to get into the building. You can leave your shoes in the hall. The space has a private bathroom, cold water for drinking, and hot water for making tea. There's a quiet room set apart from the main studio should you need to take some space.
