For those of you new to hiking and interested in the Mourne Wall Challenge 19 miles (Grade 5) you will be starting to take the first steps on the road to fitness at least four to six months prior to the big day. A well-rounded fitness training plan is essential to an enjoyable, injury free and successful day. Add these five elements to your fitness program to have a balanced routine.
Make sure your fitness routine includes aerobic fitness, strength training, core exercises, balance training, and flexibility and stretching. Most importantly try to spend at least 1 day per week in the mountains. If at any point you are experiencing pain in the ankles, knees, hips or chest seek medical attention immediately.
NOTE: Grade 5 - Suitable for highly experienced self-reliant hikers with specialised skills, including map and compass navigation and emergency first aid. Trails will be unmarked, long, very rough and very steep. Rock scrambling and river crossings may be required. Hikes generally greater than 25km.
