About Mountain Mentors
Mountain Mentors is a community committed to self-development and support in the backcountry and beyond. Our vision is backcountry spaces where everyone belongs and feels safe. We realize this vision through facilitating one-on-one mentorship pairings for marginalized genders including women, non-binary, gender non-conforming, trans masculine and trans feminine folks. We recognize that intersectionality affects an individual's experience, and aim to provide programming that is inclusive and accessible. We offer backcountry mentorship programming in the summer (hiking, climbing) and the winter (ski touring, split-boarding). Each season, we pair mentees and mentors and provide the programming to empower pairs to define their objectives to experience growth.
About the Show
Mountain Mentors recreates on the lands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), St̓át̓imc Tmicw (St’at’imc), and Líl̓wat (Lil'wat) Peoples and neighbouring territories. Art, especially landscape-based art, embodies the connectedness we share with place. Sharing our experiences through art reminds us that the backcountry is not a place to be owned, conquered, or disrespected.
This Art Show features the work of program alumni, with much of the art inspired by the outdoors and the trips shared within the Mountain Mentors community. We hope to celebrate the holistic and diverse identities of our participants who engage in outdoor recreation, and challenge the narrative of how we relate to the land around us.
From landscape photography, hand-carved wood, homemade jewelry, felting, watercolours, a collaborative linocut, and more - diverse interests and identities come together to create an inspiring and expansive collective. Each of our artists explores how art and the outdoors are intertwined into their identity, with a common reflection on the role of relationship (to ourselves, each other, and to the land) coming to light.
