The Bandy Heritage Center, Creative Arts Guild, Prater’s Mill Foundation, DSC Derrell Roberts Library, DSC Appalachian Studies minor program, and Chattanooga Fiber Arts Guild are proud to partner with Emily Jennings to present a Mountain Dulcimer Workshop! The mountain dulcimer has been a quintessential instrument in the soundscapes of Southern Appalachia for centuries. Yet, it is often overshadowed by more publicly familiar instruments like the fiddle and banjo. The mountain dulcimer workshop will provide students with the opportunity to participate in an unique Northwest Georgia instrumental and musical tradition by gaining hands-on experience learning to play classic tunes on a mountain dulcimer.
This class is a morning session which will last two and a half hours total. Each student will be loaned a mountain dulcimer and shown how to play basic notes to classic songs. All necessary equipment and supplies will be provided by the instructor. This class is suitable for adults eighteen and up. No prior musical knowledge or experience is necessary.
Emily Jennings is a Naturalist at the Elachee Nature Center and an AP Environmental Science teacher with the Fulton County School District. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife, Fish and Wildlands Science and Management and a Master of Teaching in Biology Education from the University of Georgia.
Her passion for nature and wildlife of the Upland South has always been accompanied by a love for the culture and folkways of the people who have lived here. She grew up in a musical family with deep roots in the musical traditions of the region. One fateful day in 2008, she picked up her mother’s Black Mountain dulcimer and decided to learn to play, and has been playing ever since. She has been a member of mountain dulcimer playing groups including the Gwinnotters. She has also performed at numerous church events and festivals in the region. When it comes to sharing her passion for the mountain dulcimer with new learners, she adheres to a little motto she received from her mother: “There ain't no notes on a dulcimer, you jus' play it."
