Please join us for the return of the Mount Rainier Wassail (our 2nd in Mount Rainier and 11th in the DC area)! We will be singing and making merriment in Mount Rainier and Brentwood again this year, after a successful time there two years ago. And remember to bring a reusable cup or travel mug for drinking!
A wassail is an English singing tradition where you go from house to house, demanding alcoholic drinks and figgy pudding in exchange for, uhh, leaving the occupants alone? But we do things a little differently; we've preselected hosts who will be ready to serve us drinks in their backyards when we arrive. The way it works: we gather at the first stop, sing a song to our generous hosts, get fed some warm drinks (alcohol optional), then move on to the next stop along the route, rinse, and repeat. We will briefly teach all of the songs, and there is a songbook with lyrics and often musical notation available.
We are still gathering hosts for this year's wassail. Listed location is approximate for now; the meeting spot, route and more specific timing will be announced in mid-December.
Yes, this will be after Christmas and Yule, but this timing works better and 12th night is the traditional timing for a wassail anyway!
We will conduct the wassail entirely outdoors to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Please keep in mind that even though we will be outdoors, singing expels droplets much more than just talking, so consider wearing a mask to protect those around you in the event that somebody is unknowingly contagious.
