About this Event

You don't need to go to Europe to bask in delicious Mould Frites! Come and prepare your powder and frits recipe to create lush and layered experiences in the shape of objects. In these 8 weeks, you will learn with Catarina Cubelo a process of making Pâte de Verre, which similarly to cooking allows you to assemble specific combinations of colors. Pâte de Verre is a kiln-formed technique utilizing finely crushed glass frit, mixed with water and a binding agent which is applied to the surface of a refractory mold. The resulting object can be highly detailed, delicate, or of granular form.

We will cover how to make: models in clay, patterning with color, and mold making. We will go over firing cycles, and do at least 3 different types of firing.

This class is focused on learning the process and giving the students the tools and knowledge that they need to successfully make new pieces on their own after the completion of the workshop. Pieces cannot exceed 6 inches (height) and 5 inches (in any direction). The first piece will not exceed 3 inches in any direction so that students can focus on really learning the process to be able to develop more intricate pieces in the following session.

What to Expect: Participants can expect to leave with at least 5 objects plus sample tiles, this varies depending on the participant's choices and size of the piece. You will have the opportunity to make one object per 6 of the 8 sessions. Depending on the size of your piece and how fast you pack your glass you will be able to complete 5 or more objects. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to be fused in the kiln and cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
