Galaxy Scrub, a 12-acre site owned and maintained by the City of Boynton Beach, has been under restoration since its dedication in 2015. Public and private state and local organizations have been removing invasive plants and creating a habitat for gopher tortoises. Chris Lockhart, who is managing the restoration, will lead us through the area and explain the steps undertaken to reclaim the parcel, the work in progress and what remains to be done.
From Chris Lockhart:
βThe field trip to the Galaxy Sand Pine Scrub Preserve will allow you to see various stages of restoration in this urban scrub preserve.. There are interpretive signs, too. Some plants will be dormant but you can see native and persistent non-native and invasive plants along the way and nearby. This preserve also houses a few gopher tortoises. A couple of new non-native plants have been discovered.β
