The walk scheduled for May 24 was Lake Lure. Unfortunately, as a result of Helene, the walk is impossible to do. So we will have to do another to relace it. As the Morganton City walk was not scheduled for 2025, we will replace it for the May 24 walk.We will meet at the starting point (Burke County Visitor Center 140 N. Sterling St, Morganton NC) at 10:00 AM (that's when they open) May 24 for registration and step off at 10:30. Because the Greenway portion of the walk is unavailable, we will combine the 6 KM city option with 3 KM option so 10 K'ers can get their full walk.
The 6 KM route includes the historic downtown and court house, picturesque neighborhoods with old historic buildings including the home of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Flowers are in bloom and the trees have leaved out. We add historic neighborhoods for the 10 KM, plus the site where Frankie Silver was hung for killing her husband.
After the walk, we can gather at a local restaurant for some outstanding BBQ.
How to get there - take I-40 to Exit 115 and turn right off either ramp onto NC 18. Go approximately 2 miles crossing US 70 to split. Keep right onto S. Greene St and go approximately 1/2 mile on Greene, passing Court House on left to light at Avery Ave. Go left on Avery to free parking immediately on right. After parking, go right on Avery to corner with Sterling. The Visitor Center is immediately on left. If parking lot is full, you can park across street in drug store parking lot.
