Poetry, stories and music on nakedness
Join us to in an immersive exploration of performance life drawing. The Cello Man invites artists to move beyond the idea of the nude figure simply being a physical form to consider nakedness as a state of being.
The session will consist of poetry, stories and live cello music on the subject of nakedness, highlighting the rare privilege and mutual act of sharing that comes with nude modelling. Poems and short stories that particularly resonate with the model are about issues of personal vulnerability, fear, anxiety and identity questioning; and how confronting these through art can lead to acceptance and self-affirmation.
The Cello Man's hope is that adding these elements inspires the artist towards an understanding of nakedness that extends to how each of us views ourselves in an interior, confessional way, stating:
"For myself, the experience would represent a new discovery along that path as well. What interests me especially in life drawing is the reciprocal giving and sharing that takes place between the model and the artist. Perhaps unique, it can only happen in an atmosphere of complete trust, which is why I like and value it"
NB: For this session, the Cello Man will use his first name during the sessions and asks that close likenesses NOT be circulated on the internet/ social media.
More than a Muse at Cerulean Studio
‘More than a Muse’ intentionally disrupts the historical master (artist)/ muse (model) power relationship that has persisted within the Western canon of art for centuries. The series offers an alternative approach to the ways in which life models, and the artists who draw or paint them, might navigate the model-artist relationship in contemporary times.
Our ‘More than a Muse’ series reinterprets the classical Greek Nine Muses, whereby the muses are the holders of knowledge and make the decisions about what knowledge may be shared with artist-participants. Models will direct and choreograph their session/s, including venue set-up, activities/poses and timings. Sessions will be based on the models’ life stories, passions, knowledge or expertise beyond life modelling, to be interpreted by the artists. Each session will be unique and may involve storytelling, movement, poetry, costume or musical performance.
The series will comprise nine sessions in line with the Nine Muses in Greek Mythology. At the end of the series, the models will curate an exhibition of selected works created during, or inspired by, the series at Cerulean Studio.
What to expect
Each session will have a different focus, depending on the theme selected by the model/s.
We provide easels, backboards, personal art tables, and chairs/stools. Model fee is included in the price.
What to bring
Bring your favourite drawing materials and drinks/snacks to enjoy in our 15 minute break around (we have a fridge for participant use). If its your first time trying life drawing, we can supply some basic materials and instructions to get you started.
Studio etiquette
Cerulean Studio purposefully fosters a kind, welcoming and inclusive culture for models and artists. For this series, there will be strict studio rules to ensure that the studio is a safe space for models because even though the idea is to shift the model-artist power dynamic, it may also increase vulnerability/shame and requires high levels of trust between models and artist-participants.
-Please do not refer to model’s bodies in conversation with the model or other artists during the session, nor ask models questions about their bodies unless models direct such conversations.
-Please put away Smart phones/cameras during the sessions and do not take any photos of the models, nor seek their permission to do so. If models are happy for you to take photos, they will state this, including when and under what conditions this might occur.
-Given the more personal nature of this series, the content may trigger an emotional response. Please speak to Catherine, the studio manager, if you experience any discomfort during a session.
