More Money, More Problems: NIL Deals' Effect on Booster Donations

Abstract:

While universities still may not pay their student athletes, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements allow student athletes to profit from their reputations and public profiles. We explore whether or not money flowing to NIL deals “crowds out” donations to university athletic departments as boosters elect to use NIL deals to secure elite athletes to boost a school’s athletic performance.
