The Shades of Blue Octet was formed in The Villages about 7 years ago and has been performing for club meetings, dances, and various jazz festivals since that time. The band’s library consists of the original arrangements used by the Dave Pell Octet back in the 1950-70 era and arrangements by the leader Paul Holtzman. The styling of the band could best be described as west coast cool jazz.Paul received bachelor’s degrees in both music and electrical engineering from the University of Miami. He served in a navy band in San Diego and toured for several years as lead trombone with the Charlie Spivak Orchestra. He also played in bands backing up such artists as Eydie Gorme, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Judy Garland. Prior to moving to the Villages, he fronted his own octet and a 17 piece big band in New Jersey as well as playing with the Jump City Jazz Orchestra in Philadelphia. The band members have been carefully selected, and all have performing professionally for many years.
This More Jazz Club event is for residents of The Villages and guests with a visitor pass. Doors open at 5:30pm. We have seating with tables and chairs, and you may bring your own beverage and snacks. Admission is $15 for member or $20 for non-members. Annual dues to become a member is only $10.
