Appearing frequently as a duo for intimate performances around the northwest, Moon Music is a quartet in the recording studio. Chelsea Luker from Quadraphonnes and Mars Retrieval Unit (voice, saxophones, guitar) and Dan Duval from Ocular Concern (guitar) played in funk bands Joytribe and Midnight’s Children before falling in love, upending their lives, and then developing Moon Music. The new band was conceived as a blend of Moonchild, King Crimson, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. The seamless, heady blend of neo-soul, folk-rock, and psychedelic jazz captured on “Sweet Life” brings the listener on a sonic journey to an inviting new dimension.
"Sweet Life" features three original songs by Chelsea and a cover of the Joni Mitchell tune “Blue.” The original songs explore the pain, confusion, joy, and complex emotions that arise when suddenly leaving long-term relationships to pursue a new path. Joining Moon Music in the studio is Gil Assayas, Todd Rundgren’s touring keyboardist. Gil, an old friend of Moon Music, provides keys and synth bass. His presence is a rare treat, as his massive YouTube channel (GLASYS) of math-rock video game covers, gear reviews, and virtuosic synthesizer playing occupies most of his time. Drummer Stephen Pancerev (Paxselin), an old colleague of Duval from the Portland jazz universe, brings his orchestral, percussive drum-set textures to the recording. Combining these diverse musical personalities creates a unique and curious brew that is at once startlingly original and comfortably soulful, rocking, familiar.
